Walking, to most, is just a mundane activity. Born of necessity. Avoided whenever possible—whether through driving, public transport, or taking a cab.

I used to be one of those people. I’d walk occasionally, but never if I could avoid it, and always with a destination in mind.

Never would I have dreamed of walking for walking’s sake.

A New Perspective on Walking

Then one day, I came across Ryan Holiday’s ‘Stoic Wisdom for Modern Life’ masterclass on the Calm app.

Many aspects of that masterclass struck deep chords within me. I can honestly say it changed my life. One of the lessons, just three minutes long, was simply titled Take a Walk.

In those three minutes, Holiday spoke of the great philosophers throughout history—across all cultures—who swore by walking, calling it “nourishment for the mind.”

But I would go even further.

A walk, I believe, is nourishment for the soul itself.

Nourishment for the Soul

Think about that for a second.

When we talk about nourishment, we generally think about feeding the body. Some of the more mindful among us may also consider feeding the mind.

But nourishing the soul?

Now that’s a new concept. Or rather, an old concept that has been forgotten in the modern era of fast transport and busy schedules.

The more I reflected on Holiday’s words, the more I realized the truth in them.

I never took time to nourish my soul.

Suffice to say, my soul was malnourished.

But the question was—is walking really the answer?

I decided there was no harm in trying, and I have never looked back.

How Walking Changed My Life

I’m lucky to live right on the edge of town, next to a picturesque British village, with a secluded path running between the two and a hill that offers a perfect view of both sunrise and sunset.

So I started walking there every morning, watching the sunrise from the top of that hill.

Since that fateful day when I began my morning walks, I’ve travelled a lot, but one thing I’ve never forsaken is my morning walk.

It wakes me up—better than any coffee or tea.

It helps me order my thoughts and plan my day.

It clears my mind of negativity and makes me feel connected to nature.

It quiets my overactive brain and gives me clarity.

And that’s not even mentioning the countless physical benefits.

Walking: The Most Natural Habit You Can Build

Walking is one of the single best habits we can add to our lives.

When you think about it logically, it makes perfect sense.

We are nomadic creatures.

We are hunter-gatherers who are always meant to be on the move.

It is our natural state of being.

Now, I’m no hermit. I don’t believe we should abandon modern life and live in the woods. Progress is important—it is our duty as humans to advance. Both as individuals and as a society.

But modernity cannot come at the cost of forgetting who we truly are.

Walking is a simple way to stay connected to that primal essence. To reconnect with our deeper selves—the true self beneath all the distractions, bright lights, and fast-paced modern chaos.

Walking allows us to just be.

But don’t just take my word for it—seize the day and see for yourself!
