The Small Things Are the Big Things

I’m currently teaching my one-year-old son to brush his teeth.

I sit him in the bathroom, put a little toothpaste on his toothbrush, and we take turns.

  • He brushes my teeth.
  • I brush his.
  • Back and forth, back and forth.

Then, last night, something changed.

After doing this routine several times, I reached for his toothbrush—but this time, he pulled it away and started brushing on his own.

Was it perfect? No.
Did he do it well? Not really.

But he had grasped the idea.

Luckily, I had my phone set up filming so I could send the moment to his mum.

And this morning, after watching it probably for the 60th time, something hit me.

My little boy is growing up.

Time Moves Fast—Too Fast

It feels like just yesterday that I was bringing him and his mum home from the hospital.

Now, here he is, brushing his own teeth and high-fiving me with pride.

Time has just flown.

  • How long before he’s running?
  • Before his first fight?
  • His first girlfriend?
  • His first job?
  • His first house?
  • His first child?

How long do I really have to teach him?

How long do I have to help him grow?

How long do I have to guide him toward his purpose?

The truth is, not long at all.

Time Waits for No Man

Since last night, I’ve been thinking about how lucky it was that I captured that moment on video.

But here’s the thing:

We can’t film every moment.

Life doesn’t come with a pause button.

My son’s first year already feels like a blur.

And if I’m honest? The last year has changed everything.

I lost almost everything—my home, my marriage, my sense of stability. I even had to move back to my home country and start over.

It was the hardest year of my life.

But in losing everything, I gained something priceless—clarity.

I now understand, more than ever, what truly matters.

The Little Moments Are All We Have

The little moments with my son.
The little moments with family.
The little moments of self-improvement, of growth, of helping others.

Life isn’t about the big wins—it’s about the small, fleeting moments that make up our days.

And the scary thing?

Once they’re gone, they never come back.

The only question is: Are we making the most of them?

How Do We Make the Little Moments Count?

Knowing that time moves fast, how do we make each moment matter?

Simple:

We must be mindful and present.

1. Be Mindful of How You Spend Your Time

One day, we’ll all run out of little moments.

When you’re on your deathbed, looking back, what will you regret?

Nobody ever lies there wishing they had spent more time scrolling their phone or playing meaningless games.

Yet, every day, we waste time on things that don’t matter.

Before you do something, ask yourself:

  • Is this the best use of my time?
  • If today were my last day, would I be happy spending it like this?
  • Does this bring me closer to my goals, my family, my purpose?

If the answer is no, then why are you doing it?

2. Be Fully Present in Every Moment

Being present doesn’t just mean being physically there—it means being mentally engaged.

  • If you’re playing with your child, but thinking about work, you’re not present.
  • If you’re working, but daydreaming about your holiday, you’re not present.
  • If you’re with family, but scrolling your phone, you’re not present.

We can’t be everywhere at once.

But we can be fully present in what we’re doing right now.

Because when we are, we don’t just go through the motions—we truly experience life.

The Little Moments Shape the Big Picture

One day, all we’ll have left are memories of the little moments.

  • The bedtime stories.
  • The high-fives.
  • The shared meals.
  • The tough lessons.

And when that day comes, I want to know that I was there.

Not just physically.
Not just half-paying attention.
But truly, completely there.

Because in the end, the little moments are all we have.
