The Power of Routine – And What Happens When It Breaks
I’m a big believer in routine.
Discipline brings freedom.
Structure creates success.
Consistency builds momentum.
But let’s be honest—life doesn’t always go to plan.
We all have off days—those mornings when things don’t go as planned:
Maybe you slept through your alarm.
Maybe an unexpected event threw off your schedule.
Maybe you just feel exhausted.
This happened to me today.
Normally, I wake up at 4:30 AM to run and train before my son wakes up. It sets the tone for my day, clears my mind, and ensures I’m physically and mentally ready to be a good dad.
But last night, my son kept me up.
This morning? I slept in.
I broke my routine.
And at first, I felt frustrated—because I knew I had wasted time.
But here’s the truth:
An off day doesn’t have to be a wasted day.
With the right mindset and a simple system, you can still get back on track and make the most of the time you have.
Here’s how.
Step One – Forgive Yourself, But Don’t Make Excuses
The first and most important step?
Cut yourself some slack—but own your actions.
That doesn’t mean blaming external factors. It means taking responsibility without beating yourself up.
For example:
Yes, my son kept me up all night.
Yes, I was exhausted.
Yes, I chose to sleep in.
Was it the best choice? No.
But I can’t change the past.
What I can do is refocus on the present and make the best of the time I have left.
Many people waste their off days because they fall into a negative spiral of self-criticism:
“I’ve already ruined the day, so I might as well do nothing.”
“I’m off track—what’s the point in trying now?”
“I’ll just start again tomorrow.”
This mindset is the real killer of progress.
Instead, make a mental reset:
Acknowledge the mistake.
Forgive yourself.
Decide to make the most of what’s left.
Because success isn’t about never slipping up—it’s about how quickly you recover.
Step Two – Reset Your Mindset
After a disrupted routine, your mental state is often scattered.
This is why the second step is to centre yourself.
Some great ways to do this:
Meditation – Clears your mind and resets focus.
A quick workout – Shifts your energy and mindset.
A shower (hot or cold) – Refreshes and recharges you.
A short walk – Gets you moving and reconnected to the present.
For me? I took my dog for a walk.
It wasn’t as long as our usual run, but it was enough to:
Breathe in fresh air.
Clear my mind.
Remind myself that one setback doesn’t define the whole day.
Find what works for you. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s resetting your focus.
Step Three – Review and Prioritize
Once you’ve reset your mindset, the next step is to take control of your schedule.
Instead of panicking about lost time, ask yourself:
What are the most important tasks I need to complete today?
What can be moved or adjusted?
How can I still make today productive?
Not all tasks are equal.
Some things must get done today. Others can wait.
Here’s my approach:
Urgent & Important Tasks → Get done first.
Important but Less Urgent → Rescheduled or adjusted.
Low-priority Tasks → Pushed to another day.
This simple prioritization prevents overwhelm and creates clarity.
Even if the day didn’t start well, I now have a clear plan to make the rest of it productive.
Step Four – Take Action Immediately
Momentum comes from action.
Now that you’ve:
Forgiven yourself
Reset your mindset
Prioritized your tasks
It’s time to start doing.
No overthinking. No waiting for the “perfect moment.”
Start with the most important task.
Do something small to create momentum.
Don’t let the setback define the rest of the day.
The biggest mistake people make on off days?
They sit around feeling guilty instead of getting back to work.
The sooner you take action, the sooner you feel in control again.
Because discipline isn’t about never missing a day—it’s about how quickly you bounce back.
What Separates Winners from Everyone Else?
Anyone can perform well on a good day.
But the real winners?
They still show up on the hard days.
They push through setbacks.
They make the most of whatever time they have.
With these four simple steps, you can turn an off day into a productive day—every time.
But don’t just take my word for it.
Seize the day and see for yourself.
